Twenty kilometres of lines and 40 stops, from Fontaine to Echirolles and from the university campus to Europole, this will be the total extent of the tram system by the end of 2000.

The next major extension will be the addition of line C, running east-west, with construction due to start in 2001.

The arrival of the tram in Grenoble was an opportunity for a total rethink about the city. Restoring a public garden, laying out a park, a new car park, a fountain: all these opportunities for redevelopment were seized.

The materials used for street surfacing, selected in collaboration with the municipalities concerned, are one of the most sensitive expressions of the process of breathing new life into the city's image.

The network run by TAG (Transports de l'Agglomération Grenobloise) is one of the most dynamic networks in France. It comprises 15 bus routes (others are planned), and last year the network won the gold and bronze award presented by the magazine La Vie du Rail.

TAG was awarded the following :

  • 2nd place for quality of customer service
  • 4th place for transport provision
  • 5th place for passenger comfort and efforts to modernise the network.

The Grenoble city transport system is accessible to the mobility impaired. Every year, the French association for the disabled (APF) awards a number of prizes in recognition of efforts to integrate the mobility impaired into everyday life. A jury made up of members of the national press singled out the SMTC for its policy of innovation and providing facilities for the disabled.
