A city for pedestrians

Promoting the use of bicycles is one of the priorities of the urban mobility plan. Using bicycle transport is an excellent way of improving the population's quality of life, increasing mobility and reducing pollution, thus developing the economic attractiveness of the Grenoble area.

To date there are some 197 km of cycle routes in the urban agglomeration, compared to 122 in 1994. During 1999, more than eight million francs were invested by La Métro in bicycle-friendly measures.

Every year La Métro organises the bicycle festival, an occasion designed to stimulate interest in cycling locally and to promote the usefulness and practicality of the bicycle.

One of the priorities of La Métro's mobility policy is to provide better facilities for pedestrians in the city, making walkways more user-friendly, more extensive and above all safer. Particular attention will be paid to accessibility and to sensitive areas such as junction crossings and school approaches.

The principle of '30 zones', streets with traffic-calming measures limiting cars to 30 km/h, will be extended in order to protect the parts of the city used by pedestrians.
